Importance of Parity in Co-Teaching Partnerships

The definition of parity is "state or condition of being equal."   In a co-teaching partnership, this means both teachers are valued, students see both teachers as equals, and each teacher has equal power in making classroom decisions. 

Building the foundation of a successful co-teaching partnership can begin before the school year or class starts.  This includes getting to know one another by discussing strengths/weaknesses, classroom expectations, and communication preferences.  Part of this conversation should include how you will ensure both professionals are involved in teaching and not serving the role of an assistant.  The checklist below can help ensure your partnership is based on parity.

Parity Checklist

Both teacher names are on all classroom content (assignments, syllabus, letters).

Both teachers take a lead role in the classroom at times.

Both teachers work with all students. 

Physical space for both teachers' belongings and materials in the classroom.

Use the language "we" and "us" when communicated with students and families.

Students perceive both teachers as teachers rather than viewing one teacher as an assistant.
